Loads to see and do on dry land
Our three Solent forts provide glorious isolation, total privacy and exclusive luxury, but if you fancy a spell ashore our skipper will ferry you across to Portsmouth or the Isle of Wight where plenty of landlubbery fun awaits!
Gunwharf Quays, on the mainland, offers over 90 designer outlets, 30 bars and restaurants, along with bowling or a trip to the cinema. Nearby is Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, home to over 800 years of naval history - walk the decks of HMS Victory, Nelson’s iconic flagship, and explore the pioneering HMS Warrior, the world's first iron-hulled warship powered by steam as well as sail. You can also marvel at the new £27 million Mary Rose Museum and get a fascinating glimpse into Tudor life on the ocean wave by viewing the only 16th century warship on display anywhere in the world.
You can enjoy the views of Portsmouth, The Isle of Wight and the Solent from 170 metres up at Spinnaker Tower - stretching for up to 23 miles in any direction, the 350˚panoramic views are truly breathtaking.
Portsmouth also boasts the birthplace of the famous novelist Charles Dickens – step into the world of the 19th century Dickens’ family household furnished with many of his personal possessions, including the couch on which he passed away.
The Isle of Wight is also an inviting prospect, with the little town of Cowes and its shops, pubs, restaurants and yachts making a great day out. Nearby there’s Queen Victoria’s impressive seaside Palace at Osborne where she would holiday with Albert and her nine children – you can marvel at the magnificence of the Royal Apartments including the sumptuous drawing and dining rooms and the richly decorated Indian-inspired Durbar Room.
The Needles Battery makes another great excursion. This is a Victorian gun emplacement perched high above the Needles Rocks that was also a secret test site for space rockets during the cold war era – it’s not only historically fascinating but offers superb views along England’s south coast.
